The ESR test is a nonspecific marker of inflammation levels within the body. The blood test helps to diagnose specific conditions that are associated with both acute and chronic inflammation which includes cancers and autoimmune diseases. This blood test assess the rate at which red blood cells fall into a tube, analysing the levels of proteins in the blood. If the levels are higher the blood will fall quicker showing a higher ESR result.

The ESR test can help determine whether you have a condition which causes inflammation including arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. A test can also help to monitor on going conditions.
